Week beginning 1st June

Welcome back to the final half term of the school year.

Please find below information about what we will be learning about this week;
English:
  • Phonics focus: 'u-e'
  • Adding the suffixes 'er' and 'est' to the end of adjectives
  • Sharing the story 'Lost and Found' and using it as a example of an adventure story
  • Planning and writing our own adventures story
  • Completing a reading comprehension all about 'penguins'
  • Revising all Year 1 High Frequency words to ensure we can read and spell them
Maths:
  • Counting in 2s, 5s and 10, forwards and backwards
  • Recognising 2 digit numbers made from base 10 equipment
  • Identifying 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less than a given number
  • Completing 100 square jigsaw puzzles
IPC:
  • Continuing with our topic 'We are what we eat'
  • Looking at maps of the world.  Talking about different countries and oceans
  • Learning where in the world different food comes from
  • Learning about weather around the world and climate zones

What are we learning this week?
English:
  • Phonics flashcards.  Focus sound 'o-e' and 'ow', 'ow', 'oe'
  • Daily keyword activities
  • Writing letters
  • Learning the features of formal letters
  • Writing a letter to somebody on our family that we've not seen for a while
  • Writing a letter to Miss Hall
  • Sharing our class text: 'The Enchanted Wood'
Maths:
  • Starting our new unit of work: 'Position and Direction'
  • Understanding turns, full turn, half turn, quarter turn
  • Describing position using terms 'forwards', 'backwards', 'left' and 'right'
  • Using the terms: 'above' and 'below'
IPC:

  • Learning all about our teeth
  • How we can look after our teeth
  • Playing the game 'race to lose a tooth'
  • Writing a story to enter a competition to win £500 worth of reading books for school and an iPad for yourself

Week beginning 11th May

What will we be learning this week?
English:
  • Phonics focus: 'i-e' and also 'ie', 'igh' and 'y'
  • Singular and plural nouns
  • Sharing the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood'
  • Writing adjectives to describing Little Red Riding Hood's appearance and personality
  • Big Write: using our adjectives to write a character description about Little Red Riding Hood
  • Spelling test this week will be available on Sumdog on Friday should you wish to complete it electronically
  • Spelling practise is available on Sumdog from Monday
  • Story time: sharing our new story with THS Ted.  It will be revealed on Monday which story THS Ted has chose to share with you all
Maths:
  • Starting our new unit of work all about 'fractions'
  • Finding half of a shape
  • Finding half of a number or quantity
  • Finding a quarter of a shape
  • Finding a quarter of a shape or quantity
IPC:
  • Learning about our taste buds
  • Carrying out an investigation using our taste buds to taste different flavours
  • Finding out and researching how different animals taste their food

Hard at work

This has been a shorter week with just 4 days for us to fit in all our work before the long Bank Holiday Weekend.  Everyone has worked hard and also had lots of fun.

Week beginning 4th May

What are we learning this week?
English:
  • Phonic flashcard practise.  Our focus this week is 'a_e'
  • All about questions.  Can you remember what comes at the end of a questions?  Can you write a question mark?
  • Sharing the story of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'
  • If you were one of the Three Bears, what questions would you ask Goldilocks and discovered she was in your house?  E.g. 'Why did you sleep in my bed?'  'Why did you break my chair?'
  • Writing answers to the questions.  What might Goldilocks have said in reply?
  • Daily story time sharing the book 'The Hen Who Wouldn't Give Up'.  I wonder what will happen to Hilda the Hen this week?
Maths:
  • Daily flashbacks
  • Adding equal groups and recording this as repeated addition
  • Making 'arrays'
  • Doubling numbers

IPC:
  • Have you beans started to grow that we planted last week?
  • Different parts of a plant: seed, seedling, root, stem, leaves, flower, fruit, tendril, shoot, petal, stigma, stamen, pollen
  • Creating a picture to show the different parts of a plant.  Can you use resources you have at home to help you?  Cupcake cases make good flowers and string makes great roots!
  • Cutting up fruit to find some seeds.  Can you plant them and help them grow?
Special events this week:
  • It's V.E. day on Friday.  There is a V.E. Day folder of activities in your folder of work this week.  Feel free to use as many or as few of these as you wish.  You might like to have a look at them during some Enrichment time
  • Year 2 Google Class Meet: Monday 4th May at 1pm
